Our present text shows that the only difference God recognizes is that between the men who do not have divine life and those who do. There are those who are after the flesh and there are those who are after the Spirit. All men were born lost, born in the state of enmity against God. “That which is born of the flesh” (John 3:6). But God did something about this. He laid the foundation for saving some men by communicating divine life to them in the justifying process of redemption
